Introduction

East Greenwich High school was established in in 1942. To meet thee individual needs of students, courses are offered at three academic levels: accelerated (Level 1), college preparatory (Level 2), and remedial (Level 3). They also offer special education programs. The school is a forum for critical thinking and self-definition. It is the source of motivation and the necessary framework upon which students build self-confidence, make decisions relevant to their unique needs, accept responsibilities, and prepare for a democratic way of life. East Greenwich High School was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as an Exemplary Secondary School in the 1983-84 school recognition program.

Student Characteristics

In East Greenwich High School doesn't have diverse ethnicity of students. They have 94% of the student body being white, 1% African American students, 4% Asians, and 1 % Hispanic students. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2006) For the ESL services there were 100% non recipients due to the students already knowing English. 87% students did not participate in the Special Education Services, 2% were self contained, and 11% of the students had their general education with the support of the Special Education Services.
For the year of 2006-07 the the average scores for the district of East Greenwich on the SAT was 565 for Mathematics, 562 for Verbal, and 560 for writing. 88% of the students in East Greenwich took the SAT. (Charles E. Meyers. Superintendent)
Health is also a big issue in high schools. In East Greenwich High School, 21% of the students say that they smoke at least once a day, about 17% say they use chewing tobacco, almost 25% say that they use illegal drugs, and 41% of the students say that they drank alcohol at least once. The students at Easy Greenwich High School can always turn to the school with help with personal problems. When it comes to personal or family problems, 15% of the students say they can go to a teacher or staff member to talk to them about it. When it comes to academic issues, 69% of the students say they can go to a teacher or a staff member. That shows that students in East Greenwich High School are pretty comfortable with talking to their teacher about academic problems more than personal problems. This basically means that for example not being able to agree with teachers in class is not a problem. This also means that most of the students get along with their teachers well and there are hardly any problems.
In High School, there are usually many problems when it comes to getting along with the other students, and other serious situations. In East Greenwich High School, 27% of the students say that they have been robbed one or more times, 6% say that they were teased or bothered by another student, and 20 percent say that someone has tried to sell them drugs. These percentages are pretty low which is good because these are bad and serious situations, which means there are not that many bad things that happen in East Greenwich High School. There are a good amount of advanced students at East Greenwich High School. 66% of the seniors took advanced placement exams, and 71% of the exams scored at college level mastery. (Rhode Island Department of Education)


Conclusion

The town of East Greenwich is a very small community. When it comes to the High School, the community is very supportive. East Greenwich High School is a very supported school. The students there are well educated according to the percentages of exams, and percentages of their behavior. The teachers at East Greenwich High School are very committed to the students and are willing to help them whenever they need it, and more than half of the students are open to going to them for help. The student race in East Greenwich High School is not so diverse but the student abilities in East Greenwich High School are very high.
